This week for science we learnt about battery power and solar. For this blog I will talk about battery power and how different elements can work as electric circuits. Electric power travels in different ways, copper, zinc, water, salt and many others. For the experiment we started by making a hypothesis. A hypothesis is a educated guess about what might happen in the experiment.
Hypothesis: I believe that it will buzz on and off as the water spins like flicking a switch off and on until it stops, we will have to try different combinations of nails.
After the hypothesis we started by connecting a buzzer with cords out the ends that attached to the beaker. We added nails into the clips of the beaker. We added 3/4 of water to the cup and then added salt. The reason we added salt is because salt breaks down into Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl) ions which can power the cords which in turn, powered the buzzer to make a sound. The sound wasn’t too loud or frequent but we got it working a bit.
Our question was why does the salt activate the power buzzer? We found out the answer after we had done the experiment. When salt mixes with water slowly it splits into two elements, sodium and chloride. This has the ability to act as electricity for the wires.
Materials needed are:
‘T’ beaker,
‘S’ beaker,
specimen jar,
zinc nails,
copper nails,
water,
salt,
buzzer (metal clips)
My hypothesis was correct. After some testing and switching types of nails we ended up with one copper and one zinc attached. after we added the salt and mixed it slowly it buzzed in and out just as I thought it would because it was spinning at a slow speed it went for approximately 1 second before turning off only to turn on again. I believe we could have added more salt to the water so it would stay on longer.
Out of all the experiments we did I really enjoyed doing the water, salt and buzzer experiment because it was fun to see if it would turn on and we had no idea if it was going to work or not.
If I was to do this experiment again or something similar I now know that I would need to try to different nails first with more salt.
Have you ever done an experiment and how did it go?
